Peter Nisbet asked:

If you know how to blog from your own website then you will have many options open to you in the design and functionality of your blog that are not available on a hosted blog.

You can use Blogger from blogger.com or WordPress from wordpress.com. Each has its own peculiarities, benefits and disadvantages, such as the lack of trackback and categories on Blogger, and the relatively poor raw html editing facility on WordPress. However, each has its fans and adherents, and those used to one or the other are generally loathe to changing. Neither, however, offers the wide range of options open to those that have chosen to run WordPress or any other blogging software from their own webspace.

Those who use the hosted versions likely do so either because they have no need of the options that the uploaded software offers, and are happy operating a blog using the range of options offered by the blog host. Others might not have a website, and have no intentions of having one because they have no need for their own site. Many bloggers are not involved in internet marketing, and are not using their blogs to make money – not even Adsense revenue.

They enjoy blogging about the political issues of the day, the latest movies and even just their everyday lives. Others, however, use blogs professionally as part of their business, and a blog is a great medium for advertising a business or a product. It is an ideal way of linking several websites that have been designed to sell different products, and even cover different niches. This is not easy to do without a blog, since search engines such as Google frown on adverts on one website for anther site offering information on a totally different topic.

What is regarded as a lack of relevance in a website is diversity in a blog. So how do you go about running your blog from your own website? WordPress.org offers free software that you can upload to your own web space. The best way to do this is by use of an ftp client. This is software that allows you transfer files and folders from your hard drive to your website. It can also be used to transfer files from one website to another.

Upload facilities on websites allow you only to upload files, not folders or directories. Without an ftp client, you would have to create folders identical to those containing the WordPress files. You would then have to upload each file individually, while maintaining the original directory structure. This can take some time to do, and errors are easy to make. Your first steps, then, are to download the blogging software to your hard disk, then ftp it to your website. When doing this, your ftp software will also allow you to change file permissions as detailed in the blog set up instructions. You will also have to use a text editor to change the contents of a few files, but this is fairly simple to do.

You then have to create a MySQL database for your blog. MySQL is a powerful Open Source Software database management system that uses SQL (structured query language) that most normal web hosting services offer free on your web space. The database is easy to set up by following the instructions that will likely be provided by your web host.

After that you are all set. You can use the default page template that comes with WordPress, but you now have complete flexibility in the look and feel of your blog. You can upload any of the thousands of free or paid templates available online, and also any of the plugins that you want to use. You can edit all of the template elements you want to completely customize them, including the stylesheet for the whole page, the header, footer, sidebars and so on. You can add graphics, Adsense blocks, affiliate links and even offer your own products for sale.

Plugins are software elements that provide specific resources to your blog. Examples are calendars, anti-spam filters, RSS feeds, sitemap generators, tag systems and so on. There are thousands of them that can be used to totally customize your blog.

If you have your own website and business, then a blog can be a very dangerous thing. It can become so addictive that you can find yourself neglecting your website and business and spending all your time blogging and trying out various plugins, templates and themes.

Knowing how to blog from your blog from own website can be very useful, but make sure that you budget your time on it. A blog is a great thing, but very addictive.

Michelle Greene asked:

It’s been said that affiliate marketing is, without a doubt, one the quickest and most efficient ways of making money online. There are several reasons for this. A big attraction is that most affiliate programs don’t require any enrollment fees. There’s no financial investment on the part of the affiliate. Plus, it’s an excellent way to earn money online without having your own products to sell. You can simply choose a product you are interested in, and set up a web site to promote it.

An affiliate’s only job is to generate traffic to their unique affiliate link by pre-selling the merchant’s products. The sales page, the payment processing, the digital delivery, and the post sales services is all handled by the affiliate merchant.

An affiliate tracking link will track how many sales you make from your website, and you’ll be rewarded with the commission earnings.

What You Need To Be A Successful Affiliate Marketer

An affiliate network to manage your sales. This is not mandatory, but is preferred for beginners as you are able to manage your sales and statistics from one central interface. Also, many networks contain several affiliate products, so you can group similarly themed products to sell.

Two of the major affiliate networks are Commission Junction and Clickbank. Amazon and Ebay also have their own affiliate programs which can be quite lucrative. There are hundreds of other affiliate providers and you can use your favorite search engine to find them. Just enter the terms ‘affiliate networks’ and hit search.

Sometimes, to achieve better results require some expense. Getting a web host, for example, as well as a domain name, would require you to spend money. Getting professionally made graphics to make your website attractive can also cost dig into your pocket. Pay Per Click advertising, commonly referred to as PPC advertising can be costly if not done properly. These are just a few things to keep in mind.

A Website

You will require a web site or at least one page on an existing web site you might own. It’s not always necessary to set up a whole website to promote one affiliate product. You might choose to dedicate just one single page to this product, and this is fine. This method can actually be very successful. If you don’t know HTML, the language required to build a website, you can consider using a blog.

WordPress Blog Platform

WordPress is a movable-type blog. It’s a software program you download and use to create your own blogs which you could upload in your own server. You won’t have to settle for the words ‘blogspot’ or ‘livejournal’ or ‘xanga’ to be attached to your URL. You could host your blog under its own domain name, or as another page in your main website.

Blogs are great marketing tools. They get indexed quite quickly by the search engines, and often, the figure prominently well in the search engine results pages (SERPs). They could also give your main website the backlinks it needs to boost its own page rank. Additionally, a blog can be customized to become your main website.

The primary advantage of this approach is the convenience you’ll receive when it comes to publishing content. Download the WordPress client for free from www.wordpress.com .

A Product To Promote

Preferably this will be a product you have purchased yourself, as you will want to be fully aware of all aspects of the product so you can produce truthful reviews and promotions for it.

It’s best if you can choose a product that you truly like, as people will prefer your honest opinion on it and can generally tell if you are only promoting it “for the money” rather than from your own experience.

Clickbank.com and Commission Junction for example, have thousands of products that you can choose from in a wide variety of niches. These are good places to begin to find a product to promote as an affiliate.

Text That Sells The Product (Copywriting)

This is where you make your sales. You need to tell people why they should buy this product, what is in it for them?

Often this can take the form of a product review. You might casually review the product you are promoting, and subtly add an affiliate link during and after the article. This method works well as it doesn’t directly look like you are selling anything.

Those are the basics of starting your affiliate internet marketing business.

Lisa Alexander asked:

Web 2.0 doesn’t have a hard cold definition – the truth; it means different things to different people. So let’s start out historically for a second.

Tim O’Reilly, the founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media, Inc., thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world, and an activist for open standards, wrote in a October 2005 article, “The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web. Many people concluded that the web was over hyped, when in fact bubbles and consequent shakeouts (a major change in an organization or system resulting in some streamlining) appear to be a common feature of all technological revolutions. Shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take its place at center stage. The pretenders are given the bum’s rush, the real success stories show their strength, and there begins to be an understanding of what separates one from the other.”

Tim continues, “The concept of ‘Web 2.0’ began with a conference brainstorming session between O’Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O’Reilly VP, noted that far from having ‘crashed’, the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What’s more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as ‘Web 2.0’ might make sense? We agreed that id did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born.”

According to O’Reilly and many others, they agree there are eight core Web 2.0 design patterns to evaluate if a site is worthy of the Web 2.0 name. But keep in mind that each example they have investigated exhibits one or more of the key principles. So in other words, one site may have six out of eight of the core patterns, or three out of eight, etc. but still is worthy enough to carry the Web 2.0 name.

When people talk about Web 2.0 they may think it is a just about social networking and others look at Web 2.0 from a technological aspect (but according to Scott Prager, an IBM Engineer – He comments that one of the common mistakes people make, is if they use this technology then it’s Web 2.0, be Scott thinks it’s more about what enables rather than what technology it’s built with). Either way you look at it; there is a set core of characteristics build into a Web 2.0 pattern. So in other words, it’s just not about social networking or technology – it’s really about that and more.

Technologies important to Web 2.0: Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), XML and HTML, REST (Representational State Transfer), RSS (Really Simple Syndication), Atom, Tagging, also playing a large role in Web 2.0 companies are, API (least used, but important to know), Perl, Python, PHP, Ruby … etc.

Let’s go over the eight characteristics:

The Long Tail (first coined by Chris Anderson): Is a niche strategy used to implement a series of new marketing techniques, such as (Wikipedia source examples):

New Media Marketing: a term to describe the building and managing of social networks and online or virtual communities, and extend the reach of marketing to the low-frequency, low-intensity consumer in a cost effective way.

Buzz Marketing: The strategic use of word of mouth, the transmission of commercial information from person to person in an online or real-world environment.

Viral Marketing: The intentional spreading of marketing messages using social networks, with an emphasis of the casual, non-intentional and low cost.

Harnessing Collective Intelligence: Rich “interactive” user experience and Web as a platform rather than once specific aspect. Essentially what this means is that “users” contributions greatly help build and make the foundation stronger and more popular by adding their content, such as links, comments, forum posts, reviews, rating others, an aggregation of the best work of thousands, then millions of web users (example: YouTube – more comments, more “thumbs-up” the more popularity), and any content contribution really. Without the end “user” the sites popularity goes down – if there is no interactivity for the end user, it’s not collective “anything.” So in short – the site grows organically in response to user activity.

Users Add Value: The architecture of your software development relies on “public” users to add their own data thus adding more value to your application. Some examples of this are Joomla and WordPress.

Network Effects by Default: Only a small percentage of the public will go to the trouble to add value to your application and as a result, set broad scope of defaults formed by the collection of user data as a side-effect of their use of the application.

“Some” Rights Reserved: Expanding the range of creative works accessible for others to legally build upon and share. The Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to just that. The organization has released several copyright licenses known as Creative Commons licenses. These licenses, depending on the one selected, restrict only particular rights (or none) of the work instead of customary copyright, which is more restraining.

Beta: Sites like, Frappr, CafePress, Flickr, FeedBurner…etc., don’t package up new features into massive releases, but instead add them on a regular basis as part of the normal user experience. In other words, if you “package” up new features and connect them to the Internet – they are no longer ongoing services, it’s a one time deal.

Rich User Experience: According to O’Reilly’s interpretation, “Cooperate, don’t control.” He wrote that Web 2.0 applications are built of a network of cooperating data services. In a more similar explanation, applets (Small programs that run in Web browsers; usually written in Java) initially used as early as 1992, are programs that you write, and put inside your web page. Examples of a couple of “applets” are a smiley and calculator embedded in a web page.

Software above One Single Device: The application should be designed to integrate with hand-held devices, PCs and Internet services – not just the PC. It becomes more valuable if your application can be used on both he PC and an iPod for example.

As you can see Web 2.0 isn’t as simple as social networking or just about the technical side. It’s a broad range of characteristics that build a Web 2.0 site.

Davion W asked:

Niche marketing blogs are powerful income machines. Many online marketing gurus own such blogs. Not one or two only but dozens to thousands of them. This is how it works. With each niche blog pumping in a few dollars a day, it can quickly add up to huge incomes. The gurus understand that. What about you? Are you ready to learn how to create a niche marketing blog empire?

Niche marketing blogs are essentially mini-sites using blog platforms to market a product in a niche. The most popular blog content management platforms are Blogger and WordPress. These are the kings in terms of SEO and userability and expandability. Let us now take a look at what is needed to build our very own niche marketing blog empire.

Niche marketing blogs are centered around a particular tight niche. Once you select a niche topic that receives moderate searches but has little or no competition, you can start to create your first niche blog around the topic. You also need to find affiliate programs or products to sell on your blog. Since they are effective in pulling small sales over the entire month, you would need tons of them in order to create an empire.

In short, you need to duplicate the following steps for each niche marketing blog you build assuming we are using WordPress blogs.

1. Formatting and tweaking the theme to make it SEO friendly

2. Make your site easy to social bookmark

3. Putting in the relevant plug-ins

4. Monetizing the site with affiliate links and Adsense blocks

5. Updating the site with fresh content regularly

6. Promoting the blog by pinging it to major services and submitting RSS feeds to the directories.

By now, I am presuming you can see how much work is needed to do so. It is manageable if you only own one blog. But anything beyond 5 or 6 of them and you would face the crunch in terms of time and efforts. It can be challenging therefore if you want to build dozens of such niche marketing blogs, not to mention hundreds of them.

How then are the marketing gurus able to achieve that?

The gurus are able to do so because they have teams of people working for them. They have employees and many of their jobs are outsourced. But they are gurus and have deep pockets.

What about the average online or affiliate marketer?

All hope is not lost. In recent months, a powerful blogging management tool has emerged and has leveled the playing field. Without needing any manpower resource, this single tool can handle all the tasks I have mentioned earlier. What is amazing is that it can create a niche marketing blog from scratch in 5 minutes. In other words, in 5 minutes, you can own a blog ready to start earning for you.

Everything from blog creation to multiple blog management, content updating and blog promotion are managed from one tool. So now, even the average marketer can beat the odds and build his or her own niche marketing blog empire.

Find out what is this secret weapon from my niche blog.

Susan Patterson asked:

The power of the internet not only lies in the ability to access information quickly, but also through the ability to make connections and collaborate with people all over the world. Do an internet search on weight loss blogs, and you will find millions of results, many times complete with pictures and weekly weigh-ins. The ability to connect with people quickly and easily has allowed people to build instant support networks for their weight loss programs.

And the big names in weight loss are noticing, too. Weight Watchers allows members to complete their program completely online, and eDiets.com was the first to be available only online. Advances in technology allow interactive tools to aid in even greater weight loss. Start with an online evaluation, where the results are used to build the dieter’s program. Other tools include BMI calculators, calorie counters, online journals, goal trackers and more. Many report quick weight loss because of the range of support and tools available to help them on their journey. Forums, where members can interact with and encourage each other tend to be the most popular. There is also a certain anonymity that comes along with using the internet, where it is not quite as embarrassing as facing people in the real world.

But for the individual user, blogging is the most popular way to share their story with the world. A blog is simple and free to create, and can be customized to tell your story any way you like. There are online journals, where people record what they do and eat daily. Many times there is a weigh-in at the end of the week, complete with pictures, allowing a person to see the results. Other versions are like mini-magazines, with daily articles. Both versions usually allow readers to comment, and the site owner has the ability to moderate as much as they want.

If you are seeking support for your weight loss but are too embarrassed or busy to find a face-to-face support group, you might want to consider using the internet to help you in your journey. You can start a blog for free almost anywhere; Blogger or WordPress tend to be the most popular. Be sure to write daily; this helps keep you accountable for your progress and what you did today to help you with your weight loss. Be sure to keep the focus on one topic. Losing weight is a great topic because it is so broad. Some choose to focus on healthy eating, while other may discuss natural weight loss methods and supplements such as hoodia. Read the blogs of others for inspiration, and comment on articles you find helpful. Soon you will find that you have started your own little online community.
